- EMDR Basic Training (Adults) – English course
Please note: There are admission requirements for this course; see the information under "doelgroep".
During EMDR Basic Training (Adults), participants are introduced to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This is a brief, protocol-based and client-centered treatment method for trauma-related anxiety complaints. These complaints arise as a direct result of a specific distressing event, where thinking about this event still triggers an emotional response, and where a presumed causal relationship between this experience and the current symptoms (such as anxiety, low mood, intrusive memories, sleep problems, etc.) is plausible.
EMDR is now applied across a broad range of disorders as an addition to existing treatments. This includes various forms of Axis I disorders, as well as patients with severe damage to self-image, complex PTSD, and personality pathology. The possibilities (and limitations) of EMDR with these latter groups are not addressed explicitly in this training. For this, therapists are required to follow a so-called advanced training course.
Objective
The EMDR basic course focuses on learning how to apply EMDR in the treatment of uncomplicated post-traumatic stress disorder (so-called Type I trauma) and other trauma-related anxiety disorders. Only limited attention may be given to specific target groups and/or disorders, such as complex PTSD. In order to treat these types of problems, participation in the EMDR advanced training is considered necessary.
The course follows a step-by-step structure and includes short theoretical introductions, presentations of the EMDR protocol, video demonstrations, (semi-)plenary exercises, and hands-on EMDR practice in groups of three. During these exercises, participants work with moderately emotionally charged personal memories.
Teaching approach
The training focuses on understanding and learning how to perform EMDR. The basic protocol is explained and discussed step by step. Theoretical introductions (including the empirical evidence base and mechanisms of action) are illustrated through video presentations and practical exercises.
Participants practise in small groups and pairs. During the paired exercises, participants work with moderately emotionally charged memories from their own experiences.
The EMDR basic course consists of four and a half days of training. The first two days take place consecutively, followed by a third day approximately three weeks later. During these three weeks, participants are expected to apply EMDR with their own clients, which will be discussed during the third training day. The third day also includes extensive practice.
The fourth day takes place after a longer interval (approximately two months). During this final day, participants have the opportunity to discuss questions that have arisen from their practical experience with EMDR. A significant part of the day is devoted to collectively viewing and discussing selected video recordings of EMDR sessions made by the participants.
Assessment method
Written case description.
Attendance
It is essential that participants attend the entire course. Absence during any part of the first two training days will result in exclusion from further participation. The course is intensive and the amount of information covered is substantial; missing part of the training would prevent participants from applying EMDR adequately.
Participants who miss any part of the training will not receive a certificate.
After completing the training, participants may apply for membership of the EMDR Association Netherlands (Vereniging EMDR Nederland). Information about this will be provided during the course.
